Giants' Bats Quiet in 2-1 Loss to the Mets in Hunter Pence's Debut

Behind Jonathan Niese, the Mets were able to pull out a victory over the Giants, 2-1, despite going 1-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Giants only scratched three hits against Niese. One of those three hits was a Buster Posey home run which would end up being their only run.

Matt Cain was the opposite of Niese on Wednesday night. He started the game with a 30 pitch inning, an inning that included a solo home run by Ruban Tejada on the second pitch of the game.

For the first time in 2012, Cain failed to make it to the sixth inning. He did strikeout five, but walked three and worked in and out of trouble all night.

The Giants’ offense was bleak even with Hunter Pence making his debut. Pence went 0-4, but reached on a wild pitch strikeout. From a general standpoint, he did look a little anxious, which is understandable considering what he has gone through in the past 24 hours.

The Giants’ bullpen worked out of trouble as well. In the end, they didn’t allow a run, but put eight runners on base, including a crucial bases load jam in the ninth inning where Brad Penny caught a line drive a tossed the to first for the double play.

Another weird play in the eighth ultimatley had the Mets shaking their heads. With the bases loaded and none out, Josh Thole bunted to third, Scutaro flipped the ball home, and Buster Posey’s relay throw to first clanked Thole in the head. However, Thole was ruled out after the umpires discussed the play because he was interfering with the throw by running along the grass. The runners didn’t advance, either. So the Giants caught yet another break.

If you were to try and figure out how the Mets only scored two runs, good luck.

The Giants went down quietly in the ninth to closer Bobby Parnell. Pence struck out looking on a questionable call, Posey grounded out, and Scutaro chopped a slow bouncer back to the mound to end the game.
