Giants Have Interest in Free Agent First Baseman Lyle Overbay

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants have looked into signing free agent first baseman Lyle Overbay.

Overbay, who was released on Monday, has most notably drawn interest from the Reds, but they seem to be out of the running with Joey Votto expected to return sooner rather than later.

Overbay .292/.367/.448 in 96 at-bats for the Diamondbacks this season, but the rising of Paul Goldschmidt and his lack of power (just 2 home runs this season) ultimately pushed Arizona to designating him for assignment.

With Aubrey Huff's season in jeopardy, Overbay could fill the role that Huff never filled this season---a power hitter off the bench who could occasionally get some starts at first base.

According to Schulman, the thing that Overbay doesn't want to do is spend time in the Minors which is the thing the Giants would prefer should they sign him. That's what's essentially holding the deal back.
