Giants Acquire Jose Mijares on Waivers

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports is reporting that the Giants have acquired Jose Mijares (LHP) on waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

Mijares, 27, is 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 51 relief appearances this season. He has a good fastball (91.4 MPH) and can face both lefties and righties, although right-handed batters are hitting at a .295 clip off him this season, compared to lefties who are hitting a meek .214 off the southpaw.

Mijares, whose not eligible for free agency until 2015 at the earliest, is in the midst of his best season as a pro with a stellar 8.6 K/9 strikeout rate. With that said, the Giants are hoping he can bolster a bullpen that has struggled mightily in the past two weeks, posting a 5.23 ERA. But even in the wake of their struggles, their bullpen ERA remains respectable at 3.67 for the season, the eighth best mark in the National League. But with Brad Penny, Jeremy Affledt, and Shane Loux all sharing the inconsistent trait, Mijares could possibly bring a tad more consistency to the table.

Mijares, whose making a modest $925K this season, is set to hit arbitration after this offseason. Yet, he went unclaimed by nearly half of the American League, and by a whole bunch of N.L contenders as well.

Since the Giants didn't give anyone up, someone will have to be demoted to clear up space for Mirjares.  Although they have not announced what the counteracting move will be yet, he's expected to report to the Giants tomorrow.
