Bears Fall 31-24 In the Reopening of Memorial Stadium

California salvaged two fumbles, and at the hands of Stefphon Jefferson who rushed for 145 yards, lost 31-24 in the reopening of Memorial Stadium.

Jefferson, the star of the game, put the final touch on Nevada’s 31-24 win by rushing for his second touchdown with just 36 seconds remaining in the game.

Zach Maynard ignited Cal. Despite being benched for the first three series of the game due to missing a tutoring session, he finished with two touchdowns and  247 yards. However, he coughed up a fumble early in the fourth quarter, which ultimately resulted in a Nevada field goal.

California dug themselves in a deep hole early, trailing 14-0 after the first segment of the contest. But after surrendering a touchdown to Jefferson, they answered with a scoring drive of their own. Maynard passed to Bryce Taggs for a 37-yard touchdown, putting Cal on the board for the first time of the game and the first time of the season.

The Bears pulled within four after concluding the first half with a field goal.

The Wolfpack wouldn’t let the Bears fight all the way back, however. Jefferson put Nevada on the board first in the second half with a two-yard touchdown run. And Cal would respond with a 39-yard touchdown run from Keenan Allen, engineered by Maynard who called the perfect play in the situation.

But the Bears couldn’t stop Nevada. Every time they scored, Nevada responded which was the deciding factor in the loss.
