The Nightcap - 8/15: One of the Worst Days of the Year for Bay Area Baseball

How bad was August 15, 2012 in the world of Bay Area sports?

Let us count the ways:

1. An hour before the first pitch between the Giants and Nationals, MLB announces that Melky Cabrera has been suspended for 50 games for taking performance-enhancing drugs.

2. The Giants are forced to play a man down against Stephen Strasburg and the best team in the major leagues, because the announcement came so close to gametime that they couldn't call anyone up.

3. After a promising start to the second half, Tim Lincecum decides that now would be the perfect time to start giving up a bunch of runs again. Strasburg and the Nats take two out of three in San Francisco.

4. Alfonso Soriano, who the Giants could possibly trade for to replace Melky, doesn't want to play for the Giants partly because he thinks the weather is bad in San Francisco.

5. Enough with the Giants. The A's should get some hate as well after another loss to the Royals. Seriously? The Kansas City Royals? How can the A's expect to make the playoffs if they lose to a 51-65 team?

6. Speaking of the playoffs, both the Giants and A's find themselves out of a playoff spot thanks to their losses today.

I think we've had enough for a day. How about a Chinese hurdle race to cheer you up?
