Giants Fail to Complete the Sweep, Lose to the Padres 7-1

Ryan Vogelsong struggled again, and didn't even make it out of the fourth inning, as the Giants fell 7-1 while trying to go for the sweep.

A lenghty first inning practically doomed Vogelsong of going much deeper than five inning. After surrendering a single to Everth Cabrera to leadoff the fourth, his day was numbered. The lenghy first inning began with a 13 pitch battle with Cabrera. Vogelsong got him to swing through the 13th pitch for his first of seven strikeouts. However, things got messey when he let three straight Padres reach base, leaving them juiced for Cameron Maybin who went 4-5 on the day.

One of those four hits was a two out two-run single that plated two runs. Vogelsong, who came into the game with a 0.41 ERA in the first inning, saw that number jump on Sunday.

The Giants recieved a gift from the Padres in the second inning. Buster Posey tapped a fly ball to the right fielder who dropped the ball as Posey coasted into second base. Then, they got another gift as the ball skipped under the catcher, allowing Posey to trot over to third base.  Hunter Pence would cash in with a sacrifice fly

The Padres wouldn't send anymore gifts to the Giants.

In fact, San Diego would get a gift of their own in the fifth inning when Marco Scutaro dove for a grounder only to have the ball kick out of his glove and dribble into right field. Cabrera would capitalize on the unfortunate miscue by shooting a double down the left field line that scored two more runs off Jose Mirjaes.

For good measure, Will Venable smacked a solo shot off Eric Hacker in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the Padres' lead to six. Hacker, who allowed a solo shot last night, allowed another one today.
